Bernhard Lang

Born in Crailsheim, Germany in 1970 and based in Munich since 1993, Bernhard Lang trained in advertising photography before building a freelance career across fashion and commercial work. In 2010 he began his defining project, Aerial Views, shooting from the open doors of helicopters and small aircraft to produce images that sit between landscape photography and abstract composition.

The subjects, beach resorts, greenhouse agriculture, coal mines, container harbours, reveal the geometry of human activity on the earth's surface in ways only visible from altitude. The project won first place at the Sony World Photography Awards in 2015 and first place at the International Photography Awards the same year, and was nominated for the Prix Pictet in 2016. His work has been exhibited at Somerset House and the Getty Images Gallery in London, and published in the Washington Post, the Guardian, Time, and Wired. He is based in Munich.
