Bernhard Lang

Bernhard Lang photographs the world from a few hundred feet up, and it turns abstract. Leaning from the open door of a helicopter or a small plane, he shoots beaches, greenhouses, mines and container ports from directly above. The everyday geometry of what we do to our land only becomes visible at that height.

He came to it through commercial work, training in advertising photography and building a career in fashion before starting the project that made his name. Since 2010 his aerial views have hovered between landscape photography and pattern, his work more focussed on composition than document.

Aerial Views won first place at both the Sony World Photography Awards and the International Photography Awards in 2015, and was nominated for the Prix Pictet the following year. His work has been shown at Somerset House and the Getty Images Gallery in London, and published in the Washington Post, the Guardian, Time and Wired.

He lives and works in Munich.
