There is a quiet subversion in Martha's work. A porcelain plate that looks like a wedding present until you read what it says. Her ceramics carry inscribed lines: lyrics and clichés turned inside out, that manage to be funny and cutting at once, because they happen to be true.
Each piece is slip cast or hand built in porcelain, then glazed and fired, with the words worked into the surface itself rather than added on top. The delicacy is deliberate, a fragile object made to hold language that is anything but.
Freud studied Furniture and Product Design at Kingston University before falling for porcelain, which she has called love at first sight. Her work is held in private collections across London and runs throughout the Firmdale Hotels group. She is the great-niece of Lucian Freud and great-great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud, though she has been careful to make her own name.
