Born in Milan in 1966, Marco Grassi works at the intersection of realism and surrealism, building his practice around intensely personal female portraits that combine precise figurative technique with unexpected colour, lacquering, and, increasingly, the incorporation of gold leaf into backgrounds, a device he developed after travelling to Russia in 2013 to study Byzantine icon traditions.
