Ian Marlow's sculptures do something steel is not supposed to do: they move. Not literally, but the surfaces shift as you walk around them, picking up colour from the surrounding landscape and changing through the day as the light does.
His subjects are leaves, seedheads, flowers, and birds, rendered larger than life to make visible what proximity has made invisible.
Born and raised in rural Somerset, Marlow began carving stone before moving to stainless steel and glass in the early 2000s. He works the steel surface with a fine texture that gives it an almost liquid quality, then introduces coloured glass to add warmth and depth.
A member of the Royal Society of Sculptors, he holds commissions for the New Community Hospital in Bridgwater and All Hallows School in Somerset.
He works from a converted chapel studio in Buckland Dinham, and also writes poetry.
