Happy Friday and Shana Tova,
Friends and family are forever asking me to be our impromptu photographer. And I love doing it.
Still, I’m often bemused as to why they aren’t better photographers. Am I terrible to say this? I mean, if we use cooking as a parallel, it may take some real skill to poach an egg (I’ve tried and I can not do it…), but everyone should be able to scramble an egg. Right?
Some photography is poaching an egg; only the best will get it right, whereas other shots are scrambling an egg; anyone can get very good.
On this theme, I share some extraordinary Fine Art Photography in both the Reveal and Artwork sections. And in my Daydream section I share some inspiration for those who want to improve at the basics.

I’ve worked with Mario Testino and Mark Seliger and arguably the world’s greatest living photographers, and there’s one thing they all agree about photography: You can’t fight the sun.
Even maestros with the finest equipment plan their shots around light. Ansel Adams pioneered many of the techniques we still use today, and this short video essay is a fascinating introduction.
The clever geeks at Apple and Samsung have integrated many of Ansel’s ideas into the digital algorithms your phone uses automatically, but they can’t control things like composition or setting. So here’s a bunch of videos on improving your skills (maybe start with this one).
