Decent grew up in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District, where an early awareness of contrasting city and countryside landscapes fed directly into his artistic sensibility. He went on to study architecture in Nottingham and London, where he won prizes from the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects and was nominated for the RIBA President's Medal. His training as a draughtsman underpins the precision and confidence visible in his painted work. He is also director of London-based practice Decent Goodfellow Architects, and continues to exhibit and paint alongside his architectural career.
