Yorgos Papadopoulos finds beauty in what appears broken. Inspired by nature, Cypriot iconography and the ancient symbolism of the evil eye, his glass works turn fragility into something unexpectedly resilient. There is a meditative quality to them, part jewel, part talisman, inviting you to get lost in their shifting colour and depth.
His process began with an accident at the Royal College of Art, when a sheet of laminated glass shattered but held together. Today, Yorgos deliberately breaks, colours and textures industrial glass, working pigments, gold and silver leaf into its layers before re-laminating it. The technique requires an unusual balance of force and control, allowing chance to leave its mark without determining the final composition.
A Royal College of Art graduate, Yorgos won First Prize at European Glass Context 2021. His work has been exhibited internationally and recognised within contemporary glass for his distinctive approach to the medium.
Born in Limassol, Yorgos spent two decades working in North London before returning to Cyprus, where he now lives and works.
