Contemporary Dutch still-life painting connecting living horticultural heritage and natural history with seventeenth-century Dutch visual culture.
Möderscheim creates still-life and floral paintings corresponding to the cultural history of seventeenth-century Holland. Working from her living collection of Dutch heritage tulips, including cultivars dating back to the 1590s as well as fruits, birds, insects and historic Delftware, she combines direct observation from nature with the materials and techniques of seventeenth-century painting practice.
Her practice is grounded in the study of historical sources and material research, with pigments selected for their historical accuracy. She forms the same palette as that used by painters of the Dutch Golden Age.
Her paintings therefore continue the Dutch still-life tradition in the present day, bringing together cultural history, horticulture, natural history and fine craftsmanship.
