Pam Glew

Pam Glew paints onto flags and worn fabric rather than fresh canvas, bleaching and dyeing her images into the cloth so they surface like memories or old photographs. The results have a weathered, charged quality, and because the surface is often a flag, they make insinuations about identity and belonging.

Her method is unusual and entirely her own. She works with dye and bleach on textiles, from denim to national flags, drawing images out by removing colour as much as adding it, so each piece feels found rather than simply painted.

She has shown at Dallas Contemporary and the Honolulu Museum of Art, held solo exhibitions in London, Paris and Sydney, and taken on commissions for Ralph Lauren, Armani, MTV and Microsoft.

She lives and works in Brighton, where she co-runs the Paxton and Glew gallery in the Lanes.
