Marieje van Buuren

A Marieje van Buuren wall sculpture has the quality of a mandala, circular forms built from radiating colour that mirror something closer to a personal record than a finished image. Each piece begins as a watercolour sketch and grows from there, woven, wrapped, and knotted by hand, a meditative process the artist describes as healing in itself, less a fixed plan than something allowed to emerge.

The materials are recycled and deadstock yarns, layered around an organically shaped copper frame until the form holds its own structure. There is no loom involved, only hand-wrapping and knotting around the armature, which gives each piece its slightly irregular, breathing quality, never quite symmetrical, always clearly made by a person.

Van Buuren studied at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, following a period at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. She worked as a freelance designer before committing fully to her own practice in 2020.

She lives and works between the Netherlands and the UK.
