Maria Filopoulou paints water the way others paint light: as a subject in itself, not a backdrop. Her large-format canvases of underwater swimmers, bathers, and Mediterranean seascapes treat the liquid element as a space of freedom and suspended time, figures released from gravity and rendered in the full warmth of the Greek summer.
Working in oil on large-scale canvases, Filopoulou builds her composition from personal memory and repeated visits to specific places, returning to the same pools, bays, and shorelines across multiple years. The result is work that carries the weight of sustained attention: less postcard, more record of an obsession.
She studied painting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Leonardo Cremonini from 1984 to 1988, then completed postgraduate studies at the same institution on a French Government scholarship. Her work is held in the National Gallery of Athens, the Greek Parliament, the Bank of Greece, and the Goulandris Museum. She has held over twenty solo exhibitions across Athens, London, New York, Paris, Rome, Berlin, and Venice.
