Maria Filopoulou

Maria paints water the way some painters paint light, as the subject rather than the background. Her large canvases of underwater swimmers and Mediterranean bathers turn the sea into a place of freedom and suspended time. Her subjects are bodies let loose from gravity and bathed in the warmth of a Greek summer.

She works in oil, on a big scale, and builds each painting from memory and from going back again and again to the same pools, bays and shorelines over many years. The result has the weight of long attention: the record of an obsession, not a holiday snapshot.

Filopoulou studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Leonardo Cremonini. Her work is held by the National Gallery of Athens, the Greek Parliament and the Goulandris Museum, and she has held more than twenty solo exhibitions from Athens to London, New York and Venice.

She lives and works in Greece.
