Entirely self-taught, Jonathan works in oil on canvas, building his sitters' likenesses through a technique that strips back surface detail to concentrate attention on character: face and hands rendered with a controlled intensity that photographs of the work consistently underrepresent.
His sitters include King Charles III, Sir David Attenborough, Nicole Kidman, Idris Elba, Tony Blair, Malala Yousafzai, Cara Delevingne, Damien Hirst, and Grayson Perry. His portrait of King Charles, unveiled at Buckingham Palace in 2024, became one of the most discussed works of art in recent British history. He has been the subject of major mid-career retrospectives in the UK and internationally.
