A Trifonov canvas looks composed before it looks painted, every figure and object set within a geometry so deliberate it borders on architectural. Born in Moscow in 1975, he came to painting through the theatre, where his eye for staging, light, and arrangement first developed, and that sensibility never left.
The work fuses surreal narrative with formal order, musicians and still lifes rendered through straight lines and unexpected shapes that feel composed rather than captured.
Working primarily in oil, Trifonov builds scenes with a graphic precision closer to set design than traditional painting, flat planes of colour held in careful tension. He is a noted follower of Receptualism, a Russian avant-garde concept that prioritises the viewer's perception over straightforward pictorial illusion, strangeness located in arrangement rather than technique.
He studied at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute and has worked with the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre since 1998. A member of the Artists' Union of Russia, he has exhibited at the Russian Academy of Arts and the Central House of Artists in Moscow, with shows across Slovakia, Croatia, and the Czech Republic.
