Adam Ball's paintings, cut-outs, and light installations share a single preoccupation: the search for transcendence inside the natural world, colour and form pushed until they stop describing a flower or a leaf and start suggesting something closer to feeling than fact. The work asks to be looked at the way one looks at landscape, as a space to lose yourself in rather than a thing to be understood
Adam builds across mediums rather than within one, painting on canvas, hand-cutting intricate paper compositions, and constructing large-scale light boxes where colour is built from illuminated layers rather than pigment alone. The cut-paper works in particular require a patience that borders on the meditative, each piece assembled from hundreds of individually shaped elements.
He studied Fine Art at Newcastle University after a foundation course at Byam Shaw School of Art. His work has shown at Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York and the Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas, with five works held in the George Michael Collection at Christie's, and a permanent sixteen-metre light installation at Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge.
