Ben Mazey’s sculptural practice emerged during the pandemic after his return to Australia, when limited access to materials prompted an inventive, self-contained way of working. Using simple systems and constraints, he developed a process grounded in repetition and transformation, most often through slab-built ceramics and occasional bronze casting.
Mazey draws from both personal history and professional experience, including his New Zealand upbringing and an international career in fashion and design. His visual language reflects a wide range of influences, from pop art repetition and architectural intervention to ornamental excess and material impermanence.
His practice has been formally recognised through his selection as a finalist in the Woollahra Gallery Small Sculpture Prize in both 2023 and 2024, a notable achievement within Australian contemporary sculpture. Alongside commissions and workshops, this recognition reflects growing critical confidence in his work. Recent milestones include a solo exhibition in Melbourne in 2025 and an upcoming residency at the renowned Fonderia Battaglia in Milan.
