Paul paints people half-caught; glimpsed rather than pinned down. His figures are suggested through colour, texture and a deliberate incompleteness, so you sense the inner life. His portraits resist the steady, head-on gaze usually associated with portraiture.
He works mainly in oil, building each figure in loose, energetic strokes and knowing when to stop, leaving parts of the canvas unresolved so the paint stays alive rather than settling into a fixed likeness.
Wright has been shortlisted three times for the National Portrait Gallery's annual Portrait Award, most recently in 2025 with a painting of his mother who suffers with dementia, selected for exhibition and the national tour. Born in Leicester in 1973, he studied at Loughborough before a degree in Illustration at Falmouth, and has shown internationally, including at Art Miami.
