Jo is a photographer who works by hand and by chemistry, a rare process today. Her images, whether a single rose or a body of work about war and memory, are made through old and experimental darkroom processes rather than a camera alone, so each one carries the weight of both the subject and the time spent making it.
She works with historic and experimental processes, among them the silver gelatin chemigram, made by painting chemistry straight onto light-sensitive paper. Her larger projects build slowly around themes of trauma, war, memory and loss, using archive material, oral history and a measure of imaginative reconstruction.
Her photobook L'Enfer was acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum's National Art Library in 2019. She holds an MA from the London College of Communication, a Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medal for botanical photography, and has exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery and the Royal Photographic Society.
She lives and works in London, returning often for residencies at the Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland.
